What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is considered a holy month for Muslims around the world. During Ramadan, devout Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset to promote their spiritual purification, strengthen their self-control and become aware of the needs of the less privileged. Are sweets eaten during Ramadan? Of course not during the fasting period, but at the evening breaking of the fast, the iftar, they enhance the joy and fellowship amidst the challenges of fasting.

Why a Ramadan calendar?

A Ramadan calendar is more than just a way to count the days of the fasting month. It serves as a symbol of anticipation and a sense of community during this special time. As with the Western tradition of the Advent calendar, children enjoy small Ramadan calendar sweets that they receive when they open a door or bag each day. At the same time, the Ramadan calendar also reminds children of the values of Ramadan, such as compassion, generosity and gratitude, and often contains small tasks or excerpts from the Koran.

Typical Ramadan calendar sweets

A Ramadan calendar contains a variety of tasty little surprises: Turkish sweets or Arabic sweets such as stuffed dates are just as popular as more modern treats such as Haribo gummy bears or chocolate. Of course, Ramadan calendar sweets are usually gelatine-free and halal, and at Sweetz United you will find both ready-made Ramadan calendars with sweets as well as typical small Ramadan sweets that you can use to make your own calendar.
